Caution Wet Floor

Performance
2022

A collaborative project between Tingyi Jiang and Marie Vanderauwera

Cleaning the floor is an act of caring for or maintaining a space; but can it also be aggressive? Can it become a tool to occupy space by leveraging others' respect for this work?

Two performers begin cleaning the floor with wet mops from opposite corners of the space, gradually moving towards the center. The area of the wet floor expands, gradually taking over the entire space. The audience's natural reaction to avoid stepping on the wet and clean floor causes them to unconsciously move towards the center of the space. Eventually, the audience is crowded into the center of the room, the only remaining small dry area, surrounded by the wet floor.
