Make It Fit

Performance series, ongoing
Started from 2021

Make It Fit is Tingyi’s ongoing artistic research and practice. This phrase serve as a title, concept, and method, guiding the creation of diverse works across various contexts and mediums.

Make It Fit is a performance enacted by everyone in their daily lives.

Make It Fit explores the performativity of language: it is an advice, command, solution, and an answer that provokes further questions.

Make It Fit is a 'Situation-Specific Performance,' —situational, relational, personal, and universal.

Make It Fit is a strategic tool for acquiring the power of voicing.

Make It Fit — As an Art Student

Durational Performance, 2023-2024

My studio is on the ground floor, with a large window facing a busy street. This tag has been placed next to the window, using it as a 'frame' through which I perform the daily routine of an art student, visible from the street.

Make It Fit - A Missing Brick

Performance, Objects, Intervention, 2022

A brick was missing from an old wall on a street in Ghent, so I filled the hole with a sponge, fitting it perfectly. Giving it a soft support

Make It Fit — As a Collective

Collective Performance, 2021

A group of participants was connected by an elastic string, under the instruction: ‘Collaborate to build a fitting structure without verbal communication. When everyone stops moving for 5 seconds, we will assume that we have reached a consensus on this ‘fitting sculpture.’

Make It Fit — As a Guest

Performance, 2021

I invited 50 people into my room to participate in my daily life. They squeezed into my 20-square-meter room and spent a typical morning routine with me. The relationship between performer and audience, as well as host and guest, constantly shifted between us.

In process:

Make It Fit - A Life Script

Make It Fit—A Life Script is a one-hour multidisciplinary performance that explores how language constructs authority, identity, and social norms by anatomizing the internalized societal script of ‘Make It Fit’. Set within a constructed situation, it blends public address, personal narrative, sonic composition, and improvised interaction, where language becomes a live negotiation between self, structure, and collective imagination. The project transforms “fitting” into a performative strategy, challenging conformity while proposing a sustainable, adaptive model for critical artistic practice.

This project will be presented at:
Nest in Laak, The Hague, November, 2025
Tempel Amsterdam, December 11, 2025
Zaal 3 Den Haag, February 17, 2026

More info will coming soon

Make It Fit - A Manifesto in Knitting

This piece exploring the tension between individual autonomy and systemic authority through knitting, coding, and live action. Knitting is reimagined as a human-machine collaborative performance, shifting the focus from the finished object to the act of making itself. Through pre-coded patterns, repetitive labor, and human intervention, a textual-textile manifesto will emerge — proposing new performative expressions of the manifesto form. It will culminate in an eight-hour durational performance presented through live action and installation.

This project currently in the research phase with support from Stroom Den Haag.
